Εxplore the ancient history of Arcadia
Starting from Tripoli one can explore the ancient history of Arcadia, at the great Mantini plain. The region of Mantinia has enormous historical depth. It has always been a cradle of humankind.
One can start the tour from the more recent history and visit Saint Fotini. This is a unique church already integrated into the mythology of Arcadia, even though it was built in the 1970’s. It is located just opposite the archaeological site of Mantinia which was one of the major cities of ancient Greece. At the site of Gortsouli there are traces of the prehistoric city. Mantinia was the commercial and religious centre of Arcadia with a Panhellenic reach. The Hekatompedon Temple of Artemis Mesopolitidos was respected universally by all Greeks.
The journey through the history and myths of Arcadia continues with a visit to the Citadel of Nestani. In a gentle and beautiful landscape the Arcadians worshipped the Great Mother, the goddess Demetra. The Acropolis of Nestani with its well-preserved gate of the ancient wall andf ragments of the ancient tower shows the magnitud eof the importance of this region. Nestani, just by its position, being at the junction that linked Arcadia with Argolida, was avery significant area commercially. That is why it was visited by, Philip of Macedon himself. A fountain built here by the great commander has been preserved. The citadel is built with enormous stones and is the oldest in existence, of Pelasgic origin.
The important church of Our Lady Gorgoepikoos is at the rock of Goula. This is a meeting point for Arcadians and visitors too, at the large festival ofthe Virgin Mary. The Rock was a major temple, clearly prehistoric. The whole area of Nestani maintains the mysterious hue of ancient history. Just15 km from Tripoli, this quiet and well-kept village with its wonderful square, is the contemporary version of eternal Arcadia.
