It is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and was built in the 12th century with great architectural interest. It was built on the ruins of the Sanctuary of Polemokrati, grandson of Asclepius. Here Herod Atticus, a much discussed personality of the Roman Era, who enjoyed great fame and happiness, but also the greatest human miseries, lived many days of life, with estates and a luxurious villa. In the beautifully landscaped courtyard of the monastery there are sculptures from the nearby villa of Herodes Atticus, as well as elaborately decorated sculptures from the ancient temple. The church, like other buildings of the monastery includes recessed portions of sculptures of late Roman years. The monastery has a considerable library of manuscripts and historical codes. A few meters behind the monastery survived Roman aqueduct with characteristic arches.
Paralio Astros is the most important summer resort in Arcadia. In the summer the traffic is vivid and vacationers arrive from Greece. It is built in a small star-shaped peninsula, which the locals call “island”. In this figure rises the name of the town. The “island” is the most picturesque part of the village with traditional stone houses. At the edge of the quay, under the castle, there is a beautiful summer theater and a lighthouse. During the summer the theater hosts a variety of events and performances. Nearby, the picturesque harbor hosts many summer fishing, and sailing yachts. The closed bay of Astros is crowned by a semicircular beach that stretches far beyond the end of the village, to almost where the eye reaches. On the promenade there are restaurants and cafes, with colorful umbrellas and tables that serve iced coffees, light snacks and regular meals at adjacent shops. Those who prefer quiet dives can withdraw from the crowds and enjoy the crystal clear water, the blue colour of which touches the horizon.
