But it is really magical in mid-winter, with the white snow turning the landscape into a dreamy scene. Besides, then is also the perfect opportunity to slide gently over the hills on skis, at the Ostrakina ski resort.
Starting from Tripoli, the road climbs to an altitude of 1200 metres. After Davia unexpectedly, you find yourself in a realm of peace and immense beauty. This is Roeino, a village that echoes the Byzantine history of Arcadia. The churches, Saint George and the Church of Virgin Mary, were built in the 12th century. Roeino is located very near the top of Aydini and overlooks the entire plateau of Davia the “Mainalio Plain”. Trees, cool waters, paths through the sacred forest, make this the ideal place for hiking and mountaineering.
Immediately after Roeino is the wonderful Piana. An ancient hamlet, that evokes its long history. Piana has been characterized as a traditional village and is built beside the ruins of ancient Dipaia. A stroll through the folklore museum, which is quite remarkable, will illuminate unknown aspects of Arcadian life throughout the ages. From the territory of Pan we move on to Alonistena, the territory of the great “Old Man of Moria”. A lovely large village, in the green valley of Mainalo. This is where he spent his childhood years, as it was his mother Zambia’s village. This fearless woman’s monument stands on the west side of the square of the village and her grave lies at the entrance of the church.
The inns of Alonistena were famous and it was an important trading centre. One of them has been fully restored, giving us a sense of the place. A short hike through the woods leads to Kokkinovrysi a wonderful location with breathtaking views. The whole area around Alonistena is ideal for walks on foot or for cycling. And one has to spend the night here to be able to enjoy the unique starry dome.
An easy trail, well sign posted, which passes by gurgling springs leads to Plateau Rouchi. It is an area of great environmental importance and for this reason many mountain climbers’ clubs organise meetings on the Plateau.
The ski resort at Ostrakina, with its ample infrastructure, is a winter paradise where the mountain climbers and skiers climb to the beautiful peak. Friends and families come for either a weekend break or for longer holidays. The nearby Kardaras welcomes them with remarkable hospitality. The car routes are unique through roads covered with fir trees and chestnut trees. This is truly a landscape unchanged throughout the ages. Nature is predominant and showers the traveller with countless gifts.
